The Lion’s Paw
Robb White III (20 June 1909 – 24 November 1990) was an American author renowned for his work on television scripts, screenplays, and adventure novels, many of which were set in maritime environments, frequently during World War II in the Pacific Navy. White's books, primarily targeted towards younger readers but also enjoyed by adults, are mostly out of print today. However, he remains a beloved figure among baby boomers who often encountered his work through affordable paperbacks distributed in American schools during the mid-20th century.
Born in Baguio, Luzon, Philippines, to Episcopal missionaries Placidia (Bridges) and Robb White, White's early life was characterized by travel and change. His father worked initially with the Igorots and later served as an Army chaplain, prompting the family, including White's brother and two sisters, to move frequently before ultimately settling in Thomasville, Georgia.
In a 1958 appearance on the television show This Is Your Life, White's sister described him as 'the typical minister's son, rebellious and mischievous'—highlighted by a youthful prank involving rolling eggs off the roof during a Ladies' Auxiliary meeting.
